“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead
Autism Ontario York Region would be a very different place if it wasn’t for the legion of amazing people who give their time and energy, free of charge, to keep it going. They check people into our events; they man our fundraisers; they help train first responders, and liaise with both public and separate school boards. Our volunteers are as diverse as our community, and we couldn’t manage without them. But what makes someone volunteer their time to AO York?
There’s really only one way to find out – so we asked a cross-section of our volunteers to tell us what drives them. It’s safe to say that their reasons are as diverse as they are. Maybe you’ll see something of yourself in their answers – if so we can use your help!
Tell Us About Yourself?
My age – too old! Family – Me, my husband, daughter Alanna 26 ASD, son Rory @ UOIT, son Callum 17 ASD, son Cameron Gr 11, and Calvin our Service Dog. I like to be a hobby crafter, but have no time lately. When I’m not volunteering I work for hubby’s company and also volunteer for CIVICYork. Don’t go out with friends nearly enough.
How Long Have You Been Volunteering with Autism Ontario York Chapter?
Three to five years.
Why Do You Volunteer with Us?
To fulfill my camp commitment.
Do You Volunteer with any other Organization(s)?
Yes. CIVICYork / Volunteer York Region
What’s Your Idea of Perfect Happiness?
Eight hours sleep a night, summer all year long, lots of time with family & friends, time for hobbies/crafting, all my kids happy in what they do.
Who are Your Heroes in Real Life?
Other parents of special needs kids. No one knows what they do everyday and they still have a smile on their face and a good word for (almost) everyone!
What’s Your Big Idea?
All year round day programs, or maybe on the weekends. Get togethers for parents with caregiving built in!
What do You Get from Volunteering?
A chance to participate in a way that is meaningful and convenient to me, for the chapter to help support the wonderful programs they offer.
