AO York relies on fundraising to do what we do.  We are blessed to have some amazing supporters, both large and small.

The Magna Hoedown has been raising money for Newmarket and Aurora charities since 1988; it actually started out as a barbecue at Frank Stronach’s backyard.  If you’ve ever seen the big white tent that goes up every September outside Magna’s Aurora headquarters you know it’s grown a little bit since then!  We’re lucky enough to have been a chosen Hoedown charity several times over the past 10 years.  This year’s Hoedown raised a record $534,000!

There’s a solid volunteer commitment involved in the Hoedown; our camp families and participants, and many of our wonderful camp staff get involved: selling raffle and event tickets, doing setup and teardown and working at the actual events.  It’s hard work and lots of fun – and that ‘sweat equity’ brings big rewards.  This year, we partnered with Epilepsy York Region, and received $47,543!

In 2015, the Student Hoedown was introduced – students with exceptionalities from York Region kicking it country style with a barbecue lunch, dancing and entertainment provided by the Hoedown Showdown contestants, host Beverley Mahood and special guests.  Performers at the Student Hoedown get the star treatment by the most welcoming audience ever!  Many members of our community attend the Student Hoedown – seeing how much fun they have is another reason we are very proud to have been part of this event.

Our Hoedown funds go right into our summer day programs – among other things, it makes the Magna Overnight happen:  a special opportunity for campers with autism, of varying need levels, to have an authentic campout experience at the Kinark Outdoor Centre, fully accessible and fully supported.  Swimming, canoeing, paddleboats, campfires and singalongs – This is Why We Hoedown!

Each year, several worthy charities benefit from the Magna Hoedown – it’s a unique event supporting our community in a unique way.  Yee Haw!  Thanks you Magna!
